Chapter 6

Willow

“Yeah. Three of the senior choice and six hairball control. Uh-huh.” I scratch some notes onto a pad in front of me as the supplier reads back some information into my ear. “Oh, and can we do a palette of the dust-free clumping formula?”

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Bill emerge from his office. He holds a stack of paperwork in his arms as he heads straight toward me. His limp is worse today, I notice—it’s really past time for him to get that hip fixed. I wonder if I can talk him into taking a little time off to get the surgery.

“Great, thanks. Bye.” I hang up the phone and lean over to look at Bill, who stands on the other side of the counter. “What’s up, Bill?”

Without a word, he unceremoniously dumps the thick stack of papers in front of me. They land with a soft thump, and he raises an eyebrow and stares as I lift the first paper on the stack and scan it.

“What’s this?” I ask. My heart speeds up as I read the first sentence.

BUSINESS PURCHASE AGREEMENT, it says. I flip through the papers underneath. It’s sheet after sheet of information about assets and liabilities, bank information, paperwork for the building, contact information for every contractor, repair guy, supplier and the building’s other tenants. It’s everything. My belly flips and I frown as I shuffle through the stack.

“What’s this, Bill? Are you selling the business?”

He heaves a sigh. “It’s time, Willow. You have to step up or I’ll have to find someone who will.”

I’m not ready yet, I want to shout. Give me another year. But instead, eyes wide under Bill’s appraising stare, I just nod and smile tightly as I gather up the sheaf of papers and grab a binder clip from under the counter to put them all together.

“I’ll look through this tonight,” I tell him. “I’ll let you know soon.”

His face softens and he smiles gently. Gently for Bill, anyway. “Kiddo, nobody knows and loves this business as much as you do. I know you hate taking a leap of faith, but I know that you’re up to it.”

I swallow the lump in my throat and nod. “Thanks, Bill,” I say, my voice a soft fraction of its usual volume. It’s all I can work up right now. “I appreciate the confidence.”

He turns to limp back to his office, then pauses. “Don’t take too long deciding,” he says over his shoulder. “Just yes or no. Either way, things have to change. That’s how life goes.”

I tap my fingers on top of the stack of papers and think, pulling in deep breaths to calm my jangled nerves. Bill’s right about one thing—I do know this business, inside and out. Our customers and suppliers know me. Bill trusts me to make decisions on his behalf when he isn’t available.

A few days, I decide. I just need to take a few days, and then I’ll either sign the papers or make another plan.
